I’m assuming you are using a wireless router.. It would appear that it has a weak connection, and its simply unable to receive data while not close to it.
most likely your laptops Wireless LAN card is quite old and it cant detect signal from too far away maybe you just need to download the latest drivers for your wireless lan card if you know the name and model of it and what company it belongs to so that you can visit that website and click help/support section and download latest drivers
